Converting CO2 from waste contaminant to valuable chemicals

The Flowrence XD excels at producing valuable data promptly leveraging Avantium’s Flowrence® high-throughput chemical technology with operating ease. It allows flexibility in terms of chemistries that can be performed interchangeably by the operator. The data produced by one of the 4 parallel reactors contained within a Flowrence XD is instantly validated by the results of the other 3 reactors that operate under exactly the same flow and process conditions. With the Flowrence XD you don’t need to blindly trust your data, or that of your operators, you can verify it instantly. Having taken care of uncertainty and statistical variability, we are now able to focus on the chemistry.

5.1

Applications for the Flowrence XD include catalyst process performance testing in chemistries such as CO2 hydrogenation and transformation into methane, and subsequent conversion of methane into longer-chain hydrocarbons. The High-Throughput Laboratory at the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia for example, uses two of its four available Flowrence XD’s for precisely the above chemistries. Taking advantage of the benefits Avantium’s Flowrence XD offer, researchers such as high-throughput engineer Adrián R. Galilea and Ph.D. student Abhay Dokania are able to compress several months of research, typically carried out on individual reactors, into 1-2 weeks with this testing equipment. With the Flowrence XD’s 4 parallel micro-flow high-throughput reactors, researchers can test a variety of catalysts and their chemical process performance with peace of mind. It offers lots of flexibility, ease-of-use and results that will be accurate, reliable and reproducible, in such a way that researchers can focus on the chemistry.

Hear it from the end-users

“These two Flowrence XD’s by Avantium are widely used in this catalysis center in order to speed up our catalysis research in particular CO2 hydrogenation and methanol to hydrocarbon transformation.

What we really like of them is not only the parallel reactor, but the fact they are very easy to operate even with people of different backgrounds and countries (of origin). They are robust enough for us to train staff regardless of their country of origin, if they have a MS, PhD, does not matter.”

“Avantium technology has really helped us in optimizing catalyst testing efficiently. The time it would take to generate data of 16 catalysts in a single channel unit would be maybe 3 months of work, this is now compress into 1-2 weeks.

I have really loved working with Avantium units, I really impressed by the engineering use and how reliable and reproducible our data is – I wish I could always work with Avantium units.”

Ph.D. Student, KAUST Catalysis Center
