The Chemical industry creates products, which form an integral part of modern societies. They include plastics, fertilizers, packaging, clothing, digital devices, medical equipment, detergents, tires, and many others.

Most of these products are derived from fossil feedstocks. The industry urgently needs alternative solutions to reduce its CO2 footprint. In chemical conversions from biomass to sustainable chemical building blocks a lot of R&D is needed to find competitive solutions that might replace fossil-based chemicals. If we want to compete with fossil feedstocks, the processes must be optimized further, or new processes and catalysts must be developed to create successful alternatives.
