Most Continuous Catalyst Regeneration (CCR) reforming catalysts are tested using fixed-bed reactors. The main problem for most data users is how fixed-bed data should be translated, when the two operations are very different. To tackle this problem, Avantium has developed a new theoretical framework to help translate fixed-bed catalyst test data into meaningful CCR catalyst performances.

After intensive reviews by naphtha reforming experts, this work is now available for public. In this new technical article, Avantium deep-dives into the fundamentals of CCR technology and Avantium’s proprietary CCR catalyst test protocol (See here). You will learn how these two different operations can be connected.

Key highlights:

  • Under a unique circumstance, when the measured Research Octane Number (RON) reaches the RON target (e.g., 102) at Time on Stream (TOS) = 0 hours, a fixed-bed experiment is analogous to CCR operation in terms of coke deposition mechanism and apparent catalyst performance. Learn why Avantium’s proprietary CCR catalyst test protocol is theoretically the best representation of CCR operation.
  • A seemingly irrelevant pilot-plant parameter like TOS can then be interpreted as catalyst circulation rate/catalyst residence time under this special operation. This analogy offers users possibilities of data interpretation.
  • Demonstrations of two main data interpretation protocols by fixing catalyst circulation rate vs. fixing catalyst coke content. Pros/cons of each method were discussed. Learn why Avantium recommends comparing catalysts at the same catalyst circulation rate.
  • The use of Single Pellet String Reactor (SPSR) offers representative catalyst performance and unparallel repeatability without the need of solid inert diluent. This unique advantage allows Avantium to accurately analyze coke and chloride content of the catalyst.
  • This theoretical framework is universal for any CCR technologies. Its use can also be expanded to CCR propane dehydrogenation.
