Avantium joins NIST Carbon Dioxide Removal Consortium to accelerate Direct Air Capture Innovation
Avantium R&D Solutions (RDS), a global leader in high-throughput testing for sustainable chemistry, is proud to announce its membership in the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Carbon Dioxide Removal Consortium. This strategic initiative marks a significant step in advancing measurement standards and accelerating the deployment of Direct Air Capture (DAC) technologies worldwide.
The NIST Carbon Dioxide Removal Consortium brings together industry, academia, and government stakeholders to develop robust measurement solutions and standards for carbon dioxide removal. The consortium aims to enhance confidence in atmospheric CO₂ removal through consensus-based methods, traceability, and comparability.
Avantium R&D Solutions has established itself as a trusted partner for DAC innovators, offering custom-made, high-throughput adsorption testing platforms that enable rapid screening and optimization of novel sorbent materials. These platforms, co-developed with market leaders such as Climeworks, allow simultaneous testing of up to eight materials under identical conditions, ensuring precise selection of the most effective adsorbents for CO₂ capture.
High-throughput testing is a game-changer for the DAC industry. By automating parallel experiments, Avantium RDS reduces time-to-market by a factor of three to five, minimizes human error, and delivers unparalleled data quality. This approach is vital for overcoming the sector’s key challenges: improving sorbent selectivity and capacity, boosting energy efficiency, and lowering operational costs.
Our collaboration with NIST reflects Avantium’s commitment to accelerating the development and deployment of DAC solutions. Through our proprietary high-throughput experimentation platform, we support technology developers in rapidly screening and optimizing sorbent materials, helping to build a consensus-based quality infrastructure for carbon removal measurement and verification. “
Rudolf Wessels, Director Technology and Innovation of Avantium R&D Solutions
As part of the consortium, Avantium R&D Solutions will contribute expertise in evaluating measurement approaches, validating repeatability, and supporting the development of standardized test methods. The company’s experience in adsorption, desorption technologies (TSA, steam, vacuum, moisture swing, electrolysis), and process optimization positions it at the forefront of DAC innovation.
NIST’s new testing systems and reference-grade materials for DAC are set to become industry benchmarks, enabling impartial evaluation and calibration of sorbents and equipment. Avantium RDS’s participation will help ensure that measurement science keeps pace with the rapid evolution of DAC technologies, ultimately facilitating the trade of carbon removal credits.
