Albemarle validates Avantium for refinery catalyst testing

Aug 11, 2020

Albemarle has validated Avantium’s high throughput technology for independent catalyst testing of hydrocracking catalysts.

Avantium performed a series of tests to evaluate hydrocracking catalysts from Albemarle using Avantium’s 16-parallel reactors micro-pilot plant. Clear discrimination between catalysts was established due to both excellent repeatability in results for duplicated reactors (high precision for increased confidence) and run-to-run reproducibility of the reference catalysts (high accuracy). Albemarle has independently validated the data quality (precision, accuracy and reproducibility).

Avantium’s high throughput test units and services have allowed us to rapidly screen Hydrocracking catalysts with an accuracy that is at least equal to if not better than conventional pilot plants. The professionalism of the Avantium personnel executing the test greatly facilitates discussion and catches any problems that can occur early, preserving the integrity of the test results.” says Pieter Lusse, Director Commercial Technology for Albemarle.”

Avantium’s proven Flowrence® parallel fixed bed reactor platform generates extremely accurate and repeatable data and is optimally configured for side-by-side catalyst performance tests, allowing for a direct comparison of refinery catalysts with no variation on the reactor loading and low amounts of feed (less waste generated).

“We are pleased to formally obtain the endorsement from Albemarle of our testing approach, strategies and experimental setup,” commented Tiago Vilela, BD Director Refinery Catalyst Testing.  “We are committed to provide our customers meaningful results to enable fact-based decisions and ultimately increase their competitiveness & profitability.”
